Overland through Botswana to Victoria Falls

A trip in two parts. First from Johannesburg into Botswana to the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Parks, then into Zimbabwe and Victoria Falls.
The team comprised Russell, Jim and Sonya in the lead car, Veronica and Gabrielle in the middle as novices, and Whiteknuckles bringing up the rear.

Our first night in RSA at Airport Lodge.

A leafy green place.

A large room.

Even a Leopard on the Wall.

And a Fiscal Shrike on the fence outside.

A Greater Honeyguide eating our friend's Honey.

Cape Sparrows.

Taking the sun in Rhoda and Tom's Garden.

Getting ready for the trip. E & Jim check out the transport.

Yellowwood Lodge next stop.

Small individual Chalets.

Set in nice grounds.

Shared with Marico Flycatchers.

And with White Rhino on the Lawns.

We now head over the Great Grey Green Greasy Limpopo.

Onto the open roads into Botswana.

And the edge of the Kalahari.

Double-banded Courser.

Flying Banana or Yellow-billed Hornbill.

We now line up to cross the Boteti.

Second car loading.

And crossing.

Now it is our turn. We are the Rear gunners this trip.

Welcome indeed.

We make camp. Well the others erect tents. We slept in the rear of the truck.

Kori Bustard.

Not a love in, this is how Giraffe fight!

Springbok migrating for water.

Steenbok.

The seemingly endless Nxai salt pan.

The allegedly famous Baine's Baobabs. Never heard of them myself.

This is them. Somebody painted them and got famous.

The team assembled for lunch.

Green Wood-hoopoe.

African Grey Hornbill.

Into the Moremi National Park. Part of the Delta.

This must be lunch as we never got dinner before dark and Russell surely did not drink at Breakfast?

Cape Glossy Starling.

Lots of Elephants in Moremi.

Crested Barbet.

Swamp Boubou.

Red Lechwe.

Good idea! Don't want a cat peeing on the blanket.

White-backed Vulture.

Elizabeth finds a good use for the "Cup holder."

Pressing on into the Delta.

The bridges are numbered. This is number 2.

Quite an interesting construction.

Blacksmith Lapwing.

Jv Martial Eagle.

Meyer's Parrots.

Long-toed Lapwing.

This is Bridge 3. "Bridge?"

Water is deeper than usual. We did not make Bridge 4.

Now we are in Savute. As "acting " leader I had to warn the others about Wildlife.

Look out! He's behind you! Point taken!

He had come for the fruit tree at our Campsite.

Botswana Zebra.

A not so calm old Bull.

In fact he was not all that pleased to see me!

Tail end Charlie gets stuck in the sand and left behind.

Eventually Russell comes back and gives us a tug.

This photo reminds me of a David Shepherd painting.

The Osprey looks shocked.

The others missed this nice male Kudu.

Gabrielle has boxed Russell in. This could have been dangerous.

This is what was causing the blockage. Cute eh?

Chobe Sunset.

We arrive at our last outward stop in Botswana.

E and Sonia start Breakfast.

Sonia stirs it as usual.

Team Bonding.

Well maybe not?

Wattled Lapwing.

Crested Barbet.

Back in the Bush.

Russell seems to have a Giraffe in his car.Gabrielle has Veronica.

Buffalo watch us go by.

A war torn Hippo.

Kori Bustard,

Elephant inspect the new road.

Well they always walked here.

This says it all really.

Journeys end.

The Falls.

Paying our respects to Dr. David.

Plenty of water coming down the mighty Zambezi.

Promoting our Sponsors. Well a free shirt is a free shirt!

Rainbows are common. Or are these technically "Spraybows?"

Don't we make a nice picture?

Lots of water.

Really lots.

And to end at the famous Bridge. We turn round here.
