North in November 2014

A short cruise to Europes northernmost point and the Barents sea.

We join the ship, Lofoten, in Bergen.

Our cabin.

Double bunks and sofa

Lofoten was built in 1963 in style.

We chose her for this reason.

No fancy cruise ship for us.

Restaurant not snack bar.

Norwegian buffet.

Elegant lounges

A bygone age.

Next morning we were on our way.

There was a lovely sunrise.

Sunrise at a respectable hour in these latitudes.

Red Sky in the Morning but we sailed smoothly.

Calm waters inshore.

Our first Sea Eagle out of 19.

Lofoten tied up at a small port.

Scandinavian churches like ours on IOM

And Onion tops too.

Alesond Harbour.

This old boat had a Bolinder engine that evoked our memories.

We regularly passed other Hurtigruten ships on the reverse course..

We pass the Arctic Circle.

Sunrise-Sunset. A five hour difference.

Polaris on her way south to Bergen.

I will cease the narrative. It's scenery.

And sunsets.

As we go further north we can see the cold.

A small port.

The sea is a lifeline up here.

And it is getting wintery the further north we go.

Out goes the monkey's fist for tying up.

And the winter is here.

Tromso.

The Venice of the North. It says!

Fred Olsens "Boudicca". Tromso.

Tromso on the GPS. We do the bag bit for Mark.

That night we got some lovely Northern lights.

Not manning the Lifeboats. Just a record of where we were.

Next morning was more wintery and wet.

And the Bag bit at the northern limits.

See us turning the cape. This is as far as Europe goes.

Our last morning is nice again.

Heading up Kirkenes Fjord for our last stop.

Terminus for us.

The airfield at Kirkenes. No snow bothers folks here.

Our plane arrives and the journey home begins.

Via Oslo, Copenhagen and Manchester.

Leaving winter behind is fine by us!
